The Six Factors That Shape Every Admissions Decision
Every year, millions of students submit college applications — and every year, admissions offices at competitive schools make decisions that can feel opaque, unpredictable, or even arbitrary. But the process is more structured than it appears.
Colleges across the country report their admissions criteria through a standardized document called the Common Data Set (CDS), which categorizes exactly what factors they evaluate and how much weight each carries. Understanding this framework is one of the most useful things a student or family can do because it transforms a mysterious process into a knowable, workable one.
The six core criteria are Rigor of High School Coursework, Grade Point Average (GPA), Class Rank (if your school classifies it), Standardized Test Scores, Essays, and Counselor and Teacher Recommendations. Today we will start a series detailing each metric competitive colleges evaluate, what each one actually measures, and how the weight of each factor shifts depending on a school's selectivity level.
Students and families will want to modify senior schedules to make sure that they are rigorous. Senior year is the time to finish strong and not take too many off periods.
Before junior ends is a great time to connect with potential teacher and counselor recommenders. If you don’t have the standardized test score that you want yet, the summer is the time to double down. Of course, the summer months are a great time to get ahead on college application essays!
Understanding the criteria is step one. Building a strategy around them is step two.
