Digital SAT vs ACT: Which Test Should Your Student Take in 2026?

A pencil rests on an ACT answer sheet with filled circles, predominantly marking option D. The sheet shows numbers 16-36.

The Question Every Family Asks

SAT or ACT? It's one of the first major decisions in the college prep journey — and it's also one of the most misunderstood. Many students simply default to whichever test their school focuses on, or whichever their friends are taking. But choosing strategically based on your strengths can make a measurable difference in your score.

Here is what families in the Dallas–Fort Worth area and across the country need to know about both tests in 2026 — and how to decide which one gives your student the best shot.

What Changed: The Digital SAT

The SAT went fully digital in 2024, and the changes are significant. The new Digital SAT is shorter (about two hours versus the old three-hour format), adaptive by section, and delivered on a device using the College Board's Bluebook app. Each student's second module in Reading/Writing and Math is determined by how they perform in the first module, meaning the test adjusts in real time to your level.

The ACT recently went through a transformation of their own. Beginning with the September 2025 test, the ACT now offers the choice of paper or digital, and its structure has stayed largely consistent. It includes three primary sections: English, Math, and Reading with optional Science and Writing sections. Your composite score is made up of the English, Math, and Reading sections only.

Key Differences at a Glance

Format: SAT — Digital, adaptive (Bluebook app)  |  ACT — Paper & Digital

Duration: SAT — ~2 hours 14 minutes  |  ACT — ~2 hours 5 minutes (no Science or Writing)

Math: SAT — Integrated Desmos  |  ACT — Newly integrated Desmos; Partnership with TI

Science: SAT — No dedicated science section  |  ACT — Dedicated 35-minute Science section

Reading: SAT — Shorter passages, more focused  |  ACT — Longer passages, higher volume

Scoring: SAT — 400–1600  |  ACT — 1–36 composite

Composition: SAT — 50% Reading & Writing; 50% Math  |  ACT — 67% English & Reading; 33% Math

Who Tends to Do Better on the SAT

Students who gravitate toward the SAT often have strong analytical reading skills and feel comfortable working through fewer, more complex problems. The Digital SAT's adaptive format rewards students who can perform well under pressure in shorter bursts. If your student is a strong reader who finds science-specific reasoning challenging, the SAT is often the better fit.

Who Tends to Do Better on the ACT

The ACT rewards students who work quickly and confidently across a high volume of questions. If your student excels in science and math and prefers a more straightforward, fact-based format, the ACT structure may feel more natural. The ACT has less time per question on average.

The Best Way to Decide: Take a Diagnostic Test of Each

The most reliable way to choose is to take a full-length practice version of both tests under timed conditions, then compare the results. Don't just go with whichever feels more comfortable. Comfort doesn't always equal performance. Look at the scaled scores and identify where the gaps are.

At Alchemy College Prep, we start every new test prep student with a diagnostic session designed to identify exactly this, which test format aligns with their strengths, and where the highest-yield preparation opportunities are. The goal is never to prepare for both tests equally; it's to identify your best path and go all in.

One Final Note on Superscoring

Both the SAT and ACT allow superscoring — combining your best section scores across multiple test dates into a single composite. This means there is very little downside to taking either test more than once. A strategic approach to test dates, preparation, and score submission can significantly strengthen your application.
