What Changed: The Digital SAT

The SAT went fully digital in 2024, and the changes are significant. The new Digital SAT is shorter (about two hours versus the old three-hour format), adaptive by section, and delivered on a device using the College Board's Bluebook app. Each student's second module in Reading/Writing and Math is determined by how they perform in the first module, meaning the test adjusts in real time to your level.

The ACT recently went through a transformation of their own. Beginning with the September 2025 test, the ACT now offers the choice of paper or digital, and its structure has stayed largely consistent. It includes three primary sections: English, Math, and Reading with optional Science and Writing sections. Your composite score is made up of the English, Math, and Reading sections only.

The ACT rewards students who work quickly and confidently across a high volume of questions. If your student excels in science and math and prefers a more straightforward, fact-based format, the ACT structure may feel more natural. The ACT has less time per question on average.

The Best Way to Decide: Take a Diagnostic Test of Each

The most reliable way to choose is to take a full-length practice version of both tests under timed conditions, then compare the results. Don't just go with whichever feels more comfortable. Comfort doesn't always equal performance. Look at the scaled scores and identify where the gaps are.
