It's AP Season — And Every Day Counts

AP exams are here, and if you're feeling the pressure, you're not alone. Every May, millions of high school students across the country sit down to take some of the most high-stakes tests of their academic careers — exams that can earn college credit, strengthen admissions profiles, and prove to yourself that you can handle college-level work.

The good news? Even at this stage, there is a lot you can do. The students who finish strongest aren't always the ones who studied the most — they're the ones who studied the most strategically.

What AP Scores Actually Do for You

Before we talk strategy, it's worth remembering what's at stake. A score of 3, 4, or 5 on an AP exam can:

  • Earn you college credit at hundreds of universities, potentially saving thousands of dollars in tuition

  • Allow you to skip introductory courses and move directly into more advanced — and more interesting — coursework

  • Signal to admissions officers that you challenged yourself and succeeded

  • Build genuine confidence in your ability to handle college-level academic rigor

A 3 is a passing score at most institutions, though selective schools often require a 4 or 5 for credit. Check the policies of your target schools and use that as your score goal.

The Last-Minute Strategy That Actually Works

1. Stop Trying to Learn Everything

The biggest mistake students make in the final stretch is trying to review all the material. Instead, identify the highest-yield topics — the concepts that appear most often on the exam — and focus your remaining time there. The College Board publishes detailed course and exam descriptions for every AP subject. Use them.

2. Practice With Real Free-Response Questions

Multiple choice tests your knowledge. Free-response questions test your thinking. For most AP exams, the FRQ section is where scores are won or lost. Download previous years' FRQs directly from the College Board website, write timed responses, and compare your answers against the published scoring guidelines.

3. Simulate Real Test Conditions

Your brain needs to practice performing under pressure. If you haven't already, sit down and complete at least one full timed practice section this week. No phone. No pausing. Recreate the exam environment as closely as possible so test day feels familiar.

4. Know the Digital Format If Your Exam Uses Bluebook

Many AP exams have now transitioned to the Bluebook digital testing platform. If your exam is digital, make sure you have practiced with the software — not just the content. Navigating an unfamiliar interface on exam day adds unnecessary friction. Check here if you’re not sure if your exam is digital, hybrid or other.

5. Manage Your Energy, Not Just Your Time

Sleep beats an extra hour of cramming every time. Your brain consolidates learning during sleep, which means that studying until 2am the night before is actively counterproductive. Eat a real meal before the exam. Arrive early. Give your brain the conditions it needs to perform.

A Note on AP English Language and AP Literature

These two exams reward one skill above all others: the ability to construct a clear, evidence-based argument under time pressure. If you're taking either exam, spend your remaining prep time practicing thesis construction and essay structure — not rereading content. We work with students on exactly this kind of targeted writing preparation, and the improvement in even a single focused session can be significant.

You've Done the Work — Now Trust It

If you've been in an AP class all year, you know more than you think you do. The final days before the exam are about sharpening your strategy, not overhauling your preparation. Focus, rest, and walk in ready.
